1964 / B Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT 1600cc

Alfa Romeo was one of the first manufacturers to put a powerful engine in a lightweight car for mainstream production. The car was equipped with a light alloy twin overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine, similar to that of the earlier Giulietta models range. Engine capacities offered were 1290cc or 1570cc. Various configurations of carburettors and tuning produced power outputs from about 80 to about 110bhp and almost all Giulias made had a 5-speed manual transmission. These cars were noted for their lively performance among sedans of that era, especially considering the modest engine size and their performance was better than many sports cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The styling was quite straight forward, but with a great amount of detail. The engine bay, cabin and boot were all square shaped. But the grill, the rooflines and details on the bonnet and boot made for an integrated design from bumper to bumper. All versions of the Giulia were styled for Alfa Romeo by Bertone.

The car offered here today is the very rare 1570cc example and is surely the best Sprint GT available. The previous owner describes the car as ‘Excellent' in all areas of coachwork, paintwork, engine and transmission, electrical and interior trim. He further adds that the body of the car is in his opinion, one of the most original Bertone body's in existence. With so many mid 60's GT's having been converted to race specification, it is refreshing to see such a well maintained and wonderfully appealing road car.

The previous owner purchased the car in 1999 and is the 3rd owner. During his tenure the car has been lavished with time, effort and money. Major work carried out in his ownership by Bob Dove Alfa Romeo Specialist includes an overhaul of the gearbox, new clutch, upgraded front brakes, suspension and fitted seat belts. Also, in 2005 a bare metal respray was conducted to freshen the paint, the result of which is still exceptional today save for one small reaction at the front of the car. All the original panels, sills and doors were retained during the painting of the car.

The history of the car includes nine past MoT's, numerous receipts and old tax discs. An Alfa service book and a notebook from a previous owner of work that was carried out are also retained.

Offered with V5C registration certificate and MoT test certificate until April 2012, this beautiful and increasingly rare Sprint GT is ready to be used.
