1958 / unregistered Mercedes Benz 190SLThe first small Mercedes SL model was introduced in 1954 - the 190SL. The 190SL was aimed at a similar market as today's SLK model and had pretty styling modelled on the larger 300SL model. The 190SL shared many of its components with the 190 saloon range including the 1897cc straight four engine. Unlike the saloon the 190SL benefited from having twin-carbs which helped produce a top speed of 105mph.
Most of the cars built had open roadster bodies although a small number of coupes were also produced. A factory hardtop was offered as an option as with this example, along with servo brakes (which were standard from 1956) and many other items. The ‘SL' tag is supposed to translate as super-light, but despite aluminium doors, bonnet and bootlid, the 190SL is still a heavy vehicle and as such doing anything properly sporting with its 1.9-litre four-cylinder engine is a challenging undertaking. Settle for the fact that it is good, if not exhilarating to drive, with bags of style. In fact it's just the thing for those who can't afford ten times the price for the larger 300SL. Build quality is superb and this example represents excellent value given the appreciation and respect these cars have always enjoyed. The recipient of a recently completed ground-up restoration covering two years, we are proud to offer this fine motorcar to market having watched with interest for some months the course of the restorative works. Chassis #7503238 was imported in 2009 from Ohio, USA by the skilled father and son privateer duo who have painstakingly undertaken the project, and though unregistered in the UK, the car is full UK Duty and Taxes paid. More than £25,000 has been spent on this car to enhance not only the aesthetic look, but also the mechanical competence of the engine. New hoses, radiator, exhaust, petrol tank and bushes, as well as the addition of twin-Solex carburettors serve to ensure the car performs as you would expect. To the coachwork and interior, a bare-metal fresh paintjob in the most popular Titanium Silver colour, full replacement chromework and grill, as well as a beautifully completed interior refurbishment in correct red leather to the seats and dashboard with fresh black carpets and re-upholstered roof-lining of the hard top conclude a professional improvement. Finally, replacement seals and window rubbers all-round, new glass throughout and four new white walled tyres result in a truly impressive example requiring nothing but a sunny day! It is offered for sale with correct hard-top in contrasting Black, but no additional wet-weather gear. Now ready for UK Registration or Export, this fine lefthand drive example would be a proud addition to any serious enthusiast.
