1971 / GWY 50J Lotus Elan S4 FHC SE - SOLD The Lotus Elan was introduced by Colin Chapman in 1962 and epitomised Lotus core values of lightness and excellent handling. The Coupe version was introduced in 1965 and weighed just 680kgs and was powered by the then technologically advanced Lotus Twincam which gave 126bhp.
Combined with disc brakes all round and fully independent suspension, the car was quick from the off and it handled well too. All this lead to sales of over 17,000 units by the end of production in 1975. This particular car was built in 1971 as a series 4 fixed head Coupe and is still finished in its original colour of French Blue. It has had just 3 owners from new and covered a believed genuine 38000 miles. In addition to the comprehensive history file there are also copies of more recent bills which include expenditure on; A galvanised Lotus chassis with an extensively restored and repainted body with new chrome work New headlining, carpets, dashboard, exhaust and all rubbers A rebuilt John Smirthwaite engine/gearbox including a gas flowed cylinder head and new, more currently fashionable, SU carburettors. ( original Strombergs come with it) It gave 98.8bhp at the rear wheels when finished last year and has been built with historic touring and light road rallying in mind, as evidenced by the roll cage and race harnesses fitted. The original stereo is in the dash but an upgraded I-Pod system with 100 watts per channel is also fitted. Spare driveshaft couplings and a spare ignition key are available for the lucky next owner. This car is well worth seeing. It has been properly built and drives extremely well.
