1964 / B Ford Lotus Cortina Mk 1 Special Equipment - SOLD

The Lotus Cortina was first shown at the London Racing Car in January 1963.It was fitted with the Harry Mundy designed 1558cc twin cam engine, based on the Ford Kent engine and commissioned by Colin Chapman. It caused a sensation when launched.
Ford were on a major motorsport drive and Walter Hayes asked that the engine be fitted to one thousand Ford Consul two door saloons for Group 2 Homologation (Sept. 1963), and thus the Lotus Cortina was born.
This new saloon car racer went on to trounce all opposition and became one of the defining race cars of the 1960s, winning the British Saloon Car Championship for F1 Champion Jim Clark in 1964.
These early Lotus Cortina's had Chapman designed rear suspension consisting of an `A ` frame set-up with adjustable coil-over damping. Additional strengthening tubing was incorporated in the boot. All opening panels were aluminium.
Of the 2894 Mk1 Lotus Cortina's built only 64 were produced as Special Equipment models, virtually all being the basis for the work's race cars and personal transport for Ford race drivers of the day. Very few exist today as standard cars.
The enhancements to the SE included:
`C` type Camshafts and Carburettors re-jetted
 Worked Cylinder Head
 Free-flow Exhaust
 Green painted Cam Covers
 Radial tyres(Pirelli)
 Irvin Seat Belts
Special Equipment badge on rear panel

BLJ 170 B is indeed a rare Lotus Cortina retaining a wealth of original features and in excellent condition throughout following a comprehensive restoration.
It now is mechanically impressive and represents a great opportunity to enjoy and invest in a `Motorsport Icon`.
